New sidewalk Cumberland, Euclid to S. Congress

Dear Neighbors,

Last week it was a surprise and very pleasing to see a work crew on Cumberland St. They are installing an ADA, wheelchair compliant sidewalk along the north side where none existed before. Now it connects South Congress with existing sidewalks.

Cynthia Medlin provided an update at the February Meeting of the Dawson Neighborhood on Sidewalks. (Apparently, we have a small fund from developments for sidewalks, but not enough yet for a feasible project). The section of sidewalk on Cumberland adds to our needed sidewalks identified in the Dawson Neighborhood Plan. Continue reading Sidewalk of Fame

Hawks nesting on El Paso

red tailed hawks nesting

Dawson neighbor David Eliot has spotted a pair of hawks (maybe Red tailed, actual photo hopefully coming to replace the place holder above) starting to nest on El Paso. The parents feed their chicks primarily rodents, so it’s very important that we do not use rat poison in order to avoid poisoning the chicks through their food. It would be a shame to lose these new residents in the neighborhood, and, since they eat rats, we can eradicate unwanted rats using nature’s food chain.

Habitat's groundbreaking 2-23-15

Update: Despite the inclement weather, lots of people attended the groundbreaking for Austin Habitat for Humanity’s new home in the Dawson Neighborhood, including CEO Kelly Weiss and Director of Operations Greg Anderson (who attended the Dawson Neighborhood Association’s February meeting), and a local news team was there to capture the event. Former DNA officer Mitchell Harrison and current DNA officer Sandy McMillan were there to represent the DNA. In addition to all the good work that Habitat does for our community, they also will certify their new building through Austin Energy’s Green Building Program!
